Frequently Asked Questions

1. What should I do if I want to volunteer?

There are several ways in which you can volunteer with SASFAPR. If you want to go to the Santuario, there are certain details regarding dress code, scheduling, and tasks of which you must be aware of. You must also fill out several documents, such as a waiver and visitor’s log. If you want to be part of our team of educators or help out at an event, you are most welcome. Send an email to voluntarios.sasfapr@gmail.com for more information.

2. How can I deliver donation and/or coordinate a visit?

Thanks for your support! As we are a small team of volunteers, donations and visits must be coordinated in advance to ensure that someone can attend you. Send a message to info@sasfapr.org for details and to set up the agenda.

3. I want to surrender a pet. What is the process?

We are currently at capacity and cannot receive more animals. If you send us photos of the pet with details and contact information to info@sasfapr.org we will gladly share the animal through our social networks and help you find them a home.

4. What do I do if I find a newborn kitten?

If you want to be a foster home for that kitten, there are many resources available on the Internet. Kitten Lady is an excellent resource for caring for newborn kittens. Visit this link for more information: Save Kittens.

5. I want more information about TNR (Trap, Neuter, and Release).

TNR is an excellent way to control feline overpopulation without resorting to euthanasia. It means spaying and neutering community or feral cats and in that way, they live in a safe and healthy way. For more details, click on the following link: Trap-Neuter-Return.

6. I want low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination services for my pet.

At the moment, the Santuario does not offer spay/neuter or vaccination services, but whenever we know about free or low-cost initiatives, we share them via our social media presence. You can also write to info@sasfapr.org and let us know where you live. That way, we may recommend clinics that offer low-cost services near your residence.

As part of a historic agreement between the government of Puerto Rico and the Humane Society of the United States, the Santuario is part of the Spayathon for Puerto Rico initiative. It is an initiative that offers free spay/neuter and vaccination services around the Island several times a year. Stay tuned to our social media for details.

7. Can I do community work that is required of me by school or university in SASFAPR?

Of course. Write to voluntarios.sasfapr@gmail.com for dress code and scheduling details, as well as documents to fill out.

8. I live outside of Puerto Rico and wish to donate food for the animals that live in SASFAPR.

You can place your order online through www.petsmart.com and select Pick Up at the Mayagüez store. Please identify Ana Colón as the person who collects, with our email (info@sasfapr.org) and telephone (787.612.8587) in the remaining information. As soon as you complete the order, please send a message with the order number to info@sasfapr.org so we can schedule pick up. You can also order from our Amazon Wishlist.

9. I want to adopt, but I live in the United States.

No problem! Living in the United States is not an obstacle to adopting from us. If you want to adopt one of our animals write to info@sasfapr.org for details. All of our pets go to their new homes fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered, dewormed and on all preventives (heartworm). The adoptive family must cover transportation costs.

10. I want to meet the animals available for adoption.

The Santuario is full of lovely fuzzy friends that are looking for a family. If you want to visit the Santuario to meet our residents, please write to info@sasfapr.org to arrange an appointment. If you fall in love with one of our four-legged friends, we will begin the adoption process straight away.

11. What should I do if I rescue a street animal?

Thanks for helping an animal in need. It is important to check if they have a collar with identification (ID). If they don’t have one, you can also take the animal to a shelter or veterinarian to check if it has a microchip. You can publish images and details on social networks to find their family. You can also take posters or flyers to the areas where you found the animal. If their guardian does not appear, you can begin looking for a new home for the cat or dog. By law, you must wait 21 days before searching for a new home for the animal.

12. Do you help promote animals in search of homes on social networks?

Of course. It is important that you send us a description and images of the animal, as well as contact information to promote the pet throughout our social networks. You can send this information to info@sasfapr.org.

13. How can I report a case of animal abuse?

Thank you for reporting animal abuse. You can file a municipal and/or state police complaint under 2008 Law 154 on Animal Welfare and Protection. It is important that you write down the details of the agent working the complaint (last name and badge number) to follow up on the case. For more information, you can visit this website, which has information about the process and an English version of Law 154: Defensa Rincón Law 154.
